Digital Media Habits

Tell me about your digital media habits. How much time (and money) do you spend using technology for socializing and entertainment like texting and gaming?  Does it hurt your grades?  Do you recognize yourself at all in these teens' stories? Do you often switch between doing homework and things like checking Facebook, watching videos or playing games? Do you find it hard to focus on and process your schoolwork? Are your grades affected? Do you – or your parents – try to set limits on your use of technology?
When answering these questions, do not just answer yes/no...tell a story about yourself and your experiences from these questions.  These are a springboard for discussion.  You are not required to answer each question individually, but rather think about the questions to form a sophisticated, informed, and thoughtful comment.  You must post by tomorrow 8 am.

my use of technology deffinently impacts my grades negatively. the amount of money I put into personal items such as ipods, televisions and computers is at least a couple thousand dollars and eventually a new thing will come out or your item could break randomly.

my use of technology definitely effects my home life and my grades. my grades are effected because wen i come across something that i don't know how to do or something that's challenging i switch over to listening to music or going on facebook. Then i forget about my homework and my grades drop. I am not good at multitasking.

I use technology in a responsible way. I come home from school,do chores around the house and listen to music. After i do chores I work on homework while I listen to music. doing something productive while i lsten to music makes more focus and I dont get distracted

There are negatives and positives when it comes to my use of technology. I may not know much about these things but I like to spend the money for technologies that are great quality. Timing that I spend on these gadgets may be more than enough. I use it from the beginning of the day until late at night for updates and media purposes. What I learn from my own experience is that technologies can make or break you. I noticed that the distractions are affecting my grades, but it is also a good source of learning. Not only that, I am also a big multi-tasking person. I find it helpful to listen to music while do school work but, websites such as Facebook can be a big distraction because it can lead to procrastinating. To prevent these from happening, my parents have warn me many times and would eventually take away my cellphone or laptop in order for me to focus on more important things such as my education.

I do not see myself fitting in with many of the sterotypical teenage technology stories. I feel this way because I use my iPod at lunch, and when walking to and from school, but other than that I don't use technology until my homework is completed. While I do enjoy using technology, using it in a responsible way helps me keep my grades up.

My use of technology affects my grades negitively rather then positively. I always find myself checking Facebook and my phone after school when I should be doing my work rather than procrastinating. When I'm online doing a paper or essay I always find myself having other tabs open that don't do anything but hurt me and the time I use on there. My parents definitely try to inforce not going on the computer before all my work is done and tell me not to respond to any messages while I'm working. I do realize that when I'm not plugged in I work a lot better and faster, but without it I think it would be a lot harder when it comes to research and being able to have everything at our fingertips.

It varies from kid to kid but technology definently impacts my school work negativly. I am always going back and forth from doing my homework to facebook. This slows me down and also makes me make mistakes.Even though I am guilty of doing it,I personally do not think it is possible for facebook or youtube to be a posotive thing when it comes to doing school work.

Technology to me is a big part of my life. I use Facebook and Youtube and a lot of other websites and am always on my phone either texting or talking over the phone. My grades sometimes slip because I am too attached to technology but I try to get my work done before free time. That doesn't always work. My parents help with that by not allowing me on the computer before homework is done unless I need to do something that includes the computer. They also would like me to keep my phone on the counter. When I decide to leave my phone off for a day or not go on the computer for play, I tend to get more things done and seem to be in a better mood.

well i feel that technology affects my life alot because it takes up alot of time a day and is alittle bit of money.i feel that it breaks up the concentration that i have on my homework so it takes longer. my parents do not put that many restrictions on my phone becaus i do nont know if they know how much time i spend on it or how easy it is to do stuff

I tend to spend close to about only two hours a day on gaming and practically close to 10 hours on socializing. I text more than i play video games because normally i dont have time to play video games or even watch tv. I feel like it does hurt my grades because i spend more time texting or on a social network such as facebook than actually concentrating on my studies. It can negatively affect my work in ways such as having music played during my work or looking at friend's facebook pages. I do switch from doing homework to gaming or texting because often i get frustrated with my work and sometimes i tend to just give up and do something different. I do find it hard to focus on homework because it is something that i would not like to be doing at the moment that i am doing it. I would rather be doing other things that i enjoy. I feel that my grades are affected by techmology because technology tend to take over my brain rather than the actual homework does. My parents try to set limits of my technology use by just saying "you're done with video games, go do your homework" but it never really works because they cannot tell what i am doing in my room. They think i am doing homework, though i am trying, it never works out too well.

Technology plays a huge role in today's society of us teens. For my self, i would say i use an average amount of it daily. When it comes to school i try to do all my homework first before i look online to check my email, Facebook or YouTube. It does keep my grades higher due to that it allows me to focus with out being plugged into the computer. When it comes to a new devise such as an ipod or cell phone i think they can be a must. They add fun and easiness to my life but i dont think they should be replaced with important things such as school work.

Fortunately, i do not pay for my phone bill nor did i pay for my laptop. But i am aware of how much i use them because i don't want the bill to be too high where i get in trouble. This helps me minimize the amount of time i talk on the phone. Texting and going online certainly takes up majority of my time while i am at home. Most students cant focus on homework for more than 15 minutes without reffering back to facebook to see what everyone is up to. I dont feel it would really hurt anyones grades but i do feel that it causes students not to put as much effort as they should. I feel its easy for me to do homework and use technology but it would really benefit me if i cut back on the usage. If my parents see that im completely ignoring my homework assignments they will be sure that i turn off my phone and computer.

Honestly, I feel that I may use technology a little too much on a daily basis. I don't think I can go over a half hour without checking my phone. It is a VERY bad habit, and I really need to stop being so addicted to my phone and texting especially. Another thing that I tend to do very often is sign onto Facebook numerous times during the day. I seem to procrastinate a lot when I know I should be doing something more important such as homework. However, I feel that nowadays, our generation is brought up with major addictions with technology. There are so many new inventions now that it is nearly impossible to go a whole day without using some sort of technology. I would like to find a way to be able to break away from my bad habits of using technology so much on a daily basis because it does affect important things such as my education and spending quality time with my family.

Personally technology does not get in the way/distract me from my homework. The first thing I do after school is get homework finished and out of the way without any technology around me, except for maybe my cell phone. technology is not usual a distraction for me while doing my homework, the big distraction is all the things going on around me. Once homework is done i get on with my social life using Facebook or browsing on the Web. This also helps keep the grades up!

I do not spend much time using technology for socializing. On the other hand, I have trouble not playing video games, which usually hurts my grades. However, I do not recognize myself in any of the above teens' stories. Unfortunately though, I do not switch between homework and video games. If I were to start playing video games, chances are, I will continue to play video games. In fact, I almost always find it hard to focus on and process my schoolwork. My parents have tried to set limits on the time that I spend playing video games, but it never works. I eventually find a way to sneak a couple extra hours of playing video games.

I definitely need to separate in my mind what's important (homework) and what's not important (funny pictures of cats.) I find myself constantly switching between tasks. Even right now as I'm typing this, I'm checking Facebook. All of this stimuli has definitely had an impact on my grades in the past; this year I'm looking forward to trying to change that.

Well nearly everyone is talking about technology having an adverse effect on their grades and schoolwork, I might as well be the example right now. Its now just before 1 as I'm starting to write this, and I'm doing so from my bed on my blackberry. Despite knowing I had a significant amount of homework, and that I'd be busy between 6-10ish tonight, I still used the remainder of my afternoon for some tv and video games, along with other useless web browsing and other non-productive tasks. So when I finally got home, of course I listened to music and got distracted by facebook for a while. Then I listened to music while doing homework(not the best idea for precalc), so my process was prolonged. I finished my other english assignment a little while ago, and just as I was putting it away I remembered about this. Well. This is what happens. Now I'm shooting for about 5.5 hours of sleep, far less than what I should get, which will definitely decrease my attentiveness in class tomorrow. Sadly I kind of knew this would happen, but facebook, texting, and music still managed to cut my efficiency by quite a bit. Well. See you all in 8 hours.

I spent more time then I should on technology. It definitely effects my grades in a negative way. A lot of my time is spent on websites such as Facebook and YouTube instead of my homework. For example, I procrastinated doing this assignment by checking my Facebook instead of thinking about what I'd write as a comment. Recently I have noticed how big of a problem this is becoming, and I am making a big effort to make sure all of my homework is done before I use the computer to avoid having my grades drop. I can relate to the stories that we read about, and think that it is a relevant topic for teens to talk about in class.

digital media is going to supplement social interaction. With out face to face interaction people become reclusive, living in a lonely bubble. Depending on there ability to "google".
